Ghana’s Parliament on Tuesday 29th March, 2022 in it’s business of the day was to read for the third time on what appears to be controversial levy intended to tax Electronic transactions known as ‘E-LEVY’ which was on it’s consideration stage.
Minutes before the Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon. Kingsford S. Alban Bagbin, could put the question for the adoption of the bill and further amendments thereon, the Minority led by their leader, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, MP for Tamale South staged a ‘Walkout’.
The Action of the Minority in Parliament appears to Ghanaians as a way of rejecting the E-LEVY ACT. However, the ORDER PAPER on 29th March, 2022 showed otherwise; On page 16 of the Order Paper, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu was captured to have proposed an amendment as to delete Subclause (1), line 1, delete “1.75%” and insert “1/50%” which clearly showed the Minority leader Hon. Haruna Iddrisu in his own conscience was convinced with the introduction if the E-LEVY but only prosed a reduction in starting rate which eventually became the final rate for adoption by the house.
Agian, Many Honorable Members on the Minority side, Hon. Sam George, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak also proposed further amendments which none of them asked that the E-LEVY should not be introduced at all.
Ghanaians are wondering whether the Minority made ‘A Fool’ out of them after all these proposal by intentionally working out of the plenary?
