The Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Minister for Education On Wednesday 19th January 2022, launched the Pre-Engineering programme for secondary school graduates with non-science backgrounds.
The Pre-Engineering programme is a one-year detailed course designed to prepare and train secondary school graduates with non-science backgrounds for enrollment into Bachelor of Science in Engineering course at the university.
The Pre-Engineering programme is a game changer that will open doors to many non-science secondary school graduates, especially Visual Arts graduates who have the desire and possess the ability and creative mind to be trained as the innovative and creative engineers to drive Industrialization in our dear country.
This programme is in accordance with the Education Strategic Plan 2018-2030 which targets a 60% enrollment of students in tertiary education enrolled in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
The Minister retreated “look forward to welcoming the first batch of students for this programme at University of Mines and Technology (UMAT) and Pentecost University, in February this year.”
BACKGROUND
The Minister for education, has in recent times heard on various platforms advocating for the need to train more engineering students that would help drive the country’s industrial transformational agenda. He is of the firm conviction, if the Youth of this country are strategically placed and trained, they have what it takes to be engineers even when they least expected. Against this background, there is the need to create the avenue to ensure this is achieved.
